As a quilter, you know the sense of satisfaction that comes from completing a large, complicated quilt. You set your mind to the task, applied yourself, learned a few new skills along the way, and ended up with a quilt you can display with pride. While there’s something to be said for focusing on one quilt at a time, in reality, that’s not always how our brains work best.

While we have chosen to be quilters (no one is forcing us to make these fabric works of art!), we also know that quilting isn’t always quick or easy.

Keep Your Brain Busy While You Rest

When you’re in the middle of a big project– maybe you’re working on a new-to-you pattern to gift to a son or daughter as a wedding present– you’re likely to enjoy the experience more if you allow yourself some quilt breaks.

Of course you can take a walk, read a book, or grab a snack for a quick break, but you don’t necessarily need to abandon your sewing room in order to take that break. Instead, you might choose to make a less involved project: something that’s small, quick, and uses different fabrics can just can be just the thing you need to keep your brain busy while also refreshing it.

Picking a Quilt Break Project

Check your Stash

What's a fabric you've loved since you bought it but haven’t used it yet? Life is short- use that gorgeous fabric!

Check the Calendar

Are there any holidays or birthdays coming up? Could your son-in-law use a dopp kit to make traveling easier? Maybe your niece just moved into a new apartment and needs a touch of warmth in the form of a few cute throw pillows

Saved Patterns

Have you bookmarked or dogeared patterns for small projects that you’ve always meant to try? They might be in books or online. Go back through those options and choose something that you’d like to have. Maybe some new oven mitts or something to wear? Quilting cotton is great for garments like shift dresses, you know!
